by Abby Dawson '16 I had so many thoughts running through my head as I walked into the front doors of the Victoria’s Secret Home Office for the first day of my summer internship. Excitement was an understatement, but I was also nervous and unsure of what was in store for me.
Back in March I had accepted a digital marketing internship offer with VS and I questioned my ability to succeed in a role that would force me to venture so far outside of my comfort zone. I had been told time and time again that PR and marketing go hand in hand, but I was incredibly unfamiliar with the in’s and out’s of digital marketing at such a large company.
To make things even more difficult, I was hired during a time of major ambiguity that left what seemed like everyone in a state of confusion. Just a few weeks before I started, a major restructure took place that totally changed the way that the VS brand functioned. Within my first week I learned that my first boss had been laid off and that her replacement was leaving the company, resulting in the decision to have me report to the Director of Digital Marketing, who had been with VS for only two months. That's three bosses in 14 days.
I am not a huge fan of change and often find myself anxious when my life doesn’t go exactly as planned. To be honest, the first month was rough. I was confused and felt like my boss didn’t have much time for me. I would leave work each day feeling unproductive, overwhelmed and worried that this “dream” internship of mine wasn’t so great after all. These feelings didn’t last for long, however. I decided that I could sit around all summer questioning my abilities or I could make the most of this opportunity and show my worth - so that is exactly what I did. I started attending more and more meetings and spent time with my team learning exactly what digital marketing was all about. I asked so many questions and jumped at every opportunity.
My team was responsible for any online advertising including paid social media, display ads and affiliate marketing. I assisted in many different projects that supported the day-to-day functions of the team and learned more than I could have ever imagined. It was so cool and inspiring to work for a brand that is so well known and loved by women around the world. The projects that I was assigned were meaningful and had a direct impact on the team.
The VS summer internship program was AWESOME and allowed me to meet and network with so many other students from schools across the country. We had a speaker series, service events and social events planned for us throughout the summer and I met some great friends that I will be sure to stay in touch with. The University Relations Team that oversaw the program also worked very hard to accommodate summer interns that were interested in staying with the company in the fall.At the end of the summer I was offered a fall internship position with the VS Brand Communication and Events team and I cannot wait to spend more time working for one of the most iconic brands in the world!
