Otterbein PRSSA Treasurer My name is Audrey Vrancken. I am the treasurer on Otterbein’s PRSSA executive board. I am currently interning as an event coordinator at a nonprofit association in Columbus. And I will graduate this spring with a business management degree. Last fall I joined PRSSA after being told that I may not be in the right major for what I wanted to do: event planning. I had no idea what PR was at the time. Instead of switching majors or adding a minor (which would cause me to stay at Otterbein longer that I had planned) I simply decided to build more experiences in the PR field. Since joining PRSSA, I have had so many valuable experiences that I never would have had in a classroom, let alone a business class. I was able to attend a Blue Jackets game and get a “behind the scenes” look. Although I was never particularly interested in the sports field, visiting the game opened my eyes to the increasing amount of options I have. Every semester, PRSSA brings in multiple professionals to speak about their experiences in the field. On speaker explained that she did not even graduate with a PR or communications degree, but with something different entirely. This drew me in. It confirmed that I did not need a PR degree to be a successful PR professional. That having a business background actually gives me that edge that may just land me a job after graduation. Now, in my internship, I am seeing that come to life. I can draw my experiences and tidbits of important information I have learned from the speakers with my learnings from my business classes. Continuing to attend PRSSA meetings keep me in touch with the field and what my peers are doing to get ahead. My advice to you: Take advantage of all the experiences Otterbein offers while you still can. Join the clubs and organizations that you would not typically see yourself in. Branch out of your major or social group. You never know what connects you will make. And...join PRSSA ;)
